Bike Skills

Bigfoot Adventures offers Bike Skills programmes to schools, various bike instructional courses, bike hire and mountain biking tours to the public.

Our ‘Cycle Safety’ programmes within schools follows national cycle safety guidelines covering bike safety checks, legal requirements, clothing choice and safe riding techniques and will be a whole new experience for many students. Cycle training enhances students cycling skills and teaches them how to ride their bikes safely and confidently. The school training is fully funded by Auckland Transport. For schools outside this region, try approaching your own regional council for a subsidy or consider charging students a small fee to cover our costs of running this important Cycle Safety Programme.

Throughout the year we are also involved with various other cycle skills training and events; ‘Beginner Bike’ and ‘Intro to Cycling on Road’ courses for adults, to more advanced skills, maintenance, repair stations/pit stops, guided rides and community events.

Adult Sessions

  • Intro to on Road: This practical on-road session is for adults who have started cycling on the road but who lack confidence or want to pick up tips on riding safely in heavier traffic. The practical workshop will give you tips and pointers to enable you to ride more confidently. The session will start on quiet streets, covering basic road positioning and turning left, right and straight through minor intersections. You will then progress to busier roads and cover riding in cycle lanes, negotiating roundabouts, traffic lights and more complex intersections.
  • Beginner Bikes: If you are new to riding, haven’t been on a bike for a while or lack confidence, this session is for you. This very relaxed practical session will provide plenty of opportunity to practice the basics. You will learn how to use gears and brakes, signalling and bike control. Separate instruction will also be provided for anybody who has never ridden a bike. The session will be run entirely in a school playground and grass is available for those who would prefer.
  • Bike Maintenance: This fun interactive workshop takes the mystery out of the bicycle. We will show you how to do a basic inspection to make sure your bike is in safe working order. You will also learn how to check your brakes and gears, clean your bike and how to fix the dreaded flat tyre.
  • Bike Checks: Bring your bike also and have it checked over by a Bigfoot bike mechanic.
  • Community Events: Bigfoot runs a number of community events such as bubs on bikes, learn 2 ride and ramps courses.
