Silver Award

Congratulations! You are on your way to achieving your Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Adventurous Journey.

At the Silver level we work hard to enhance the skills you uncovered at Bronze and develop an increased capability in the bush, on the water or on the bike!

TRAINING & practice

We have combined both Training & Practice into a 3-day activity in the outdoors, where we blend theory with facilitation of hands-on activities that align with the course syllabus.

During the training, you’ll learn about:
– Leadership and group management.
– Navigation, map orientation, compass work, identifying and navigating to features/trail crossings and 6-figure grid references.
– Environmental Care Code and how it applies to your upcoming trip.
– Camp & Activity Etiquette.

The practice component involves:
– An opportunity in the outdoors to put your experience from your Bronze Level and recent Silver Training into action with your peers.
Requirements include; map reading, compass work, leadership & group management, preparing nutritious and sustaining meals, conducting yourself confidently, being prepared by having the right equipment for your journey and behaving positively at camp and on the trail.

Bigfoot’s Silver Training & Practice satisfies the requirements for all three modes of journeying (Tramping, Sea Kayaking & Mountain Biking).

Locations include: Pinnacles or Rangitoto/Motutapu for tramping, Mahurangi Harbour for sea kayaking and Woodhill Forest for Mountain Biking.

To be eligible, you must have completed your Bronze Level Award.

If you are a direct entrant (15 years or older), you must complete a bronze training, to ensure you know the basics involved with planning and training for a journey in the outdoors, ahead of this Silver Journey.
