Jonny Moncur

Programme Manager

Having grown up in the Waitakere Ranges, Jonny has always had the bush, surf, and sand on his doorstep. Jonny has completed extensive tertiary training in bush skills and sea kayaking through AUT, while also finding that both disciplines are excellent for embarking on multi-day adventures. Many length days have been spent in the boat, stumbling upon numerous incredible locations that would otherwise be inaccessible by foot or motorboat. Jonny attributes the understanding of his personal limits and appreciation of the natural environment to his journeys in the sea kayak.

With this passion for everything outdoors, and a desire to pursue outdoor education, Jonny has been a part of Bigfoot Adventures in some way, shape, or form since 2008. Jonny has progressed through a number of roles within Bigfoot enabling him to grasp an in-depth understanding of the organization and its values.

As a born and bred West Aucklander, you could be excused for envisaging a Metallica shirt and a flowing mullet. However, Jonny has no time to maintain such appearances since he finds himself mountain biking, surfing, paddle boarding, trail running, tramping, snowboarding, kayaking, fishing, wakeboarding, long boarding, canyoning, playing drums or drinking coffee on most days. Off all these pastimes mountain biking would certainly be number one. Jonny has more bikes than pairs of underpants and wouldn’t give up mountain biking for the world. This two wheel obsession has led Jonny to extensive work in bike shops and regular competition in the sport over the past 10 years.

“The reason I’m in this game is to provide people with skills and knowledge so that they too can embark on their own adventures and gain a better understanding of themselves and the environment.”
